Summary

The topical application of pharmacologic agents is an essential part of dermatotherapy. Yet, the (dermal) bioavailability of topically applied drugs is often limited due to the effective barrier function of the stratum corneum. Down this line various more or less successful strategies have been developed to overcome the epidermal barrier. Fractional ablative lasers represent a novel technology that enables a standardized, contact- free penetration of the epidermis, and allow us to increase the bioavailability of topically applied drugs by means of a laser assisted drug delivery (LADD). Here, we present an overview of established as well as perspective applications of LADD in the clinical practice.
