Summary

In the fourth part of our series "Anatomy of the Face," we look at the blood and lymph vessels. Both systems play a central role in the defense against pathogens and in vital metabolic processes. The lymphatic system is divided into a superficial and a deep system. The superficial system is located within the subcutaneous tissue - that is, superficial to the fascia - drains the lymph of the skin and subcutaneous tissue, and runs largely parallel to the subcutaneous veins. The deep lymphatic system, on the other hand, is located deep to the fascia, drains the lymph of the subfascial tissues (muscles, bones, joints, etc.) and accompanies the deep arteries and veins. The structure of both vascular structures will be discussed in this article.

Zusammenfassung

Im vierten Teil unserer Serie „Anatomie des Gesichts“ befassen wir uns mit den Blut- und Lymphgefäßen. Beide Systeme spielen bei der Abwehr von Krankheitserregern und bei lebenswichtigen Stoffwechselprozessen eine zentrale Rolle. Das Lymphgefäßsystem gliedert sich in ein oberflächliches und ein tiefes System. Das oberflächliche System ist innerhalb des subkutanen Gewebes – also oberflächlich zur Faszie – lokalisiert, drainiert die Lymphe der Haut und des subkutanen Gewebes und verläuft großteils parallel zu den subkutanen Venen. Das tiefe Lymphsystem hingegen befindet sich tief zur Faszie, drainiert die Lymphe der subfaszialen Gewebe (Muskeln, Knochen, Gelenke etc.) und begleitet die tiefen Arterien und Venen.
